Obama T-Shirt

Students have the right to express themselves to a certain point. As long as what they say or wear does not interrupt the learning environment for students around them. Outside of school they can say what ever they want. Freedom of speech is different in schools because something you do or say could interrupt the learning process, children in schools can't go around saying or doing anything they want. It is a privilege to be able go to school, not a right, so if something is disruptive to the who school it should not be allowed. I don't view the Obama shirt or the redneck shirt as something that could cause so much disruption the learning environment would be unsuitable for the students. I think if an Obama shirt causes a disruption in a school, freedom of speech is not the biggest problem.

  1. i some what agree with what you are saying but if students have the freesom to do or say what ever they want aoutside school how come they dont have it when they are in school. i do think that students should be able to say or wear cloths that disrup the class but as lond as this doesnt happen then they should have the same rights no matter where they are at.

  2. I really think that the t shirt thing got blown way out of porportion. There was no reason for it to have been not allowed other than the teachers political views no student would have found it disruptive.

  3. As with Rigo's thought, I partialy agree with Cody about the freedom of speech. Yes, we all have freedom but we need to also respect that freedom. Otherwise, that freedom will become an insult to a certain group or person.

  4. Cody, Freedom of Speech is something you can have inside and outside school... I think that the main thing here is to know how to behaive no matter where you are. Having the right to express yourselve in your own way is somehting we need to value! There are limits, and we have to be aware of what is allowed and what is not.

  5. If we had the same rights in school and outside of school why can they hold me agains my will for a detention? If we have the same rights in school and outside of school why can't I say "I hate this class" over and over again without the teacher stopping me? Mayra, who decides how everyone should "behave"? Making everyone behave in a certain way is the same as controlling them. If I had to behave in a certain way all the time this would take away my freedoms along with the freedom of expression you were talking about.
What I am trying to say is school is different from the outside world the same way a job is different from the outside world. You can say anything you want at work but they may fire you for it if they think it affects their company. You can say anything at school but the school may throw you out if they think you are hurting the school. Both having a job and going to school is a privilege not a right.
Freedom of speech is tricky because who is the one that decides what is crossing the line? And who made that line?
